The Panton Chair is one of the most significant furniture designs of the 20th.century. With its continuous S shape, free-standing construction, and consistent reduction to a single line, it marks a turning point in the history of furniture design.
These two examples date from 1972, placing them among the third production run. They were made from solid-colored thermoplastic polystyrene and can be clearly identified by the characteristic grooves beneath the bend between the seat and the base. This was the first phase in which the design was produced industrially on a larger scale and distributed internationally.
The bold orange hue accentuates the sculptural character of the design and reflects the original palette with which Verner Panton deliberately brought atmosphere and tension to interiors. As a single piece, the Panton Chair makes a sculptural statement; as a pair, the chairs have a particularly strong presence in a space.
A design classic with a clearly established place in history, equally worthy of collecting and timeless in use.
